Mickey Mouse Wristwatches

So, what's the appeal of the Mickey Mouse watch? The iconic mouse began appearing on timepieces in the 1930's and has remained popular ever since. Is it the inherent giggle involved in saying something like "What kind of Mickey Mouse watch is this?!", using the adjective form of Mickey Mouse.

It might be the happy nature of the Everyman in rodent form, plus the way his gloved hands point to the cicumference of the dial. Does his tail ever get pressed into service as a second-"hand"...one can only imagine the appendage getting twisted into knots if this were to happen!

The original watches made by Ingersoll in 1933 came in a wristwatch form for boys, costing about $3 and a pocket watch for a buck-fifty. (It's safe to say they're worth considerably more today!) These inexpensive time pieces were so popular they probably saved the ailing Ingersoll Waterbury Clock company from bankrupcy at the time. Ingersoll eventually became Timex and the watches made a Mod pop-culture resurgence in the 1960's.

The Edmund Fitzgerald

If you were around in the 1970's you no doubt remember the Gordon Lightfoot song about the wreck of this massive ore carrier on Lake Superior in November of 1975. Because the ship was one of the largest of it's day to traverse the waters of the great lakes, as well as the dramatic and sudden sinking with all 29 crew on board, memorabilia from the Edmund Fitzgerald is still popular, it seems.

I'm always reminded of that episode of Seinfeld, when Jerry and Elaine talk about the song, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." Elaine mistakenly thinks that Edmund Fitzgerald wrote the song and that Gordon Lightfoot was the ship that sunk. Jerry then quips sarchastically that perhaps "it was rammed by the Cat Stevens." :-)

Pikachu vs Hello Kitty

Sure, there's lots of oddball Pikachu related stuff on eBay, but we think that the Hello Kitty merchandise can take a bigger detour into Strangeville than anything we've seen for Pokemon, you know? We've never seen a "Pikachu Personal Massager" or "Pikachu Toilet Paper", that's all I'm sayin'!

Sarah Palin memorabilia

We're not sure what all the fuss is about with this woman...is she somebody famous? :-)

Anyway, an amazing array of Sarah Palin stuff has been showing up, and not just the usual t-shirts and stickers: I saw somebody selling a copy of her high school yearbook. That person is getting a pretty good payday! The Sarah Palin action figure is pretty funny. I wonder if it comes with a bikini and an AK-47?

Pasta Makers

OK, so I'm watching Iron Chef America last night and one of Bobby Flay's sous-chefs whips up some killer fresh pasta...it's been on my mind all day, dreaming of that carbonara-style dish. So here you are, some nice pasta makers...have at it! And if you want to invite me over for dinner, that's fine too. :-)

Aussiebum Wonderjock enhancing underwear

Leave it to some blokes from Australia to come up with the male version of the Wonderbra. (No, we don't mean an athletic supporter for your man-boobs...now put down that bucket of fried chicken!)

These rather fashionable underwear have some sort of (ahem) bulge boosting (cough) technology that would seem to make you look a little more prominent downstairs. No word of what would happen if you don't need any "enhancement" and you wore these anyway! It might be like on "Tool Time" (giggle) when the quest for more power would always go astray...I guess they can't be responsible if you put someone's eye out or women spontaneously swoon in your company.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang collectables

The movie "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" could only have been made in 1968, I think. Who today would have thought to put Dick Van Dyke *and* Benny Hill in the same movie? These days that would be like putting Johnny Depp and Charlie Sheen and Miley Cyrus in the same film. :) But I digress! The story is endearing, and the musical numbers are memorable even if some of the singing talent is lacking at times. And little boys of course are fascinated with the idea of a rather remarkable car that can fly and float, even in these jaded post-Transformers times in which we live.

Coca Cola Machine

After looking at some of these old Coca Cola machine auctions, I think I'd definitely like to have one for my office, or maybe the back porch. I assume they can be adapted for other beverages (*cough*beer*cough*) with a little ingenuity. Even if they can't hold other kinds of beverages, having an old coke vending machine is probably a good conversation piece, you know?
